Matcha green tea flavoured food is popping up everywhere in London it’s really hard not to notice. I won’t be surprised if my local coffee shop is selling matcha latte the next time I walk in (not that I’ll be complaining though – ha! I fell in love with matcha flavoured foods way before it was cool #beingasianandall).
My next matcha green tea food find is at Ichiryu (London), an udon (Japanese thick noodles) restaurant where you can upgrade your normal white wheat flour udon to matcha udon. Such music to my ears! It is basically matcha flavoured udon noodles. The matcha powder not only creates the green tea flavouring of the noodles but you’ll also find your noodles are served green. For most of you who are used to matcha you won’t be surprised, for all of you who aren’t that familiar, well, see below:

And a close up of the matcha udon noodles below, pretty interesting huh?
What big bowls you must be thinking! It really was just the bowl itself that was big, the portion of food in the bowl was a good amount. Although the king special was a bit on the heavier side as it was a combination of both beef and tempura prawns; best of both worlds 😛
I had the niku beef matcha udon; the beef broth was tasty and thick, beef taste was solid. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The best past of it was the perfectly poached egg!
I was so impressed I had to take a close up of it! It was a perfect balance of cooked and rare, leaning towards rare (which is how I like my eggs). So soft and runny, it literally melted in my mouth.
The restaurant is less than 5 minutes walk from tottenham court road tube station, so if you’re ever in the area, do give it a go 🙂
